It is also known as black sesame, Roman coriander, black caraway, black cumin, and onion seed. There is a belief that the Islamic prophet Mohammed said that the black seed is “a remedy for all diseases except death.”
It is also stated by certain studies that the black seed’s oil can hinder the cancer cell’s activity and can heal some type of cancer cells efficiently.
However, it was not recognized by the modern medicine until recently. We will try to explain in this article why this seed is subdued by the drug industry and the political pressures that may be holding back tests on humans will be examined as well.
This oil has
been used as cancer treatment for millennia
The
anti-cancer properties of the black seed’s oil were confirmed by two separate
studies in 2011(Chinese and Saudi Arabian). While reviewing the literature on
the usage of black seed oil as a cancer treatment, they found out that this
seed has been used as traditional cancer remedy. The oil and its extract can
effectively treat many diseases, including various types of cancer, diabetes,
asthma, kidney disease, cardiovascular issues etc.
Scientists
can not completely understand how this seed heals cancer. It is suggested by
some studies that the immune system is reinforced by the thymoquinone which has
an antioxidant role. It is known for sure that it induces apoptosis in cancer
cells, without compromising the immunity. It has control over the Akt pathway,
which means that it controls the cell survival of all cells in the body,
healthy and cancerous.
Traditional
medicine is right – black cumin seed and honey work together
The effect
of honey and black cumin seed oil on oxidative stress and cancer has been
studied by Egyptian scientists. They exposed 4 groups of rats to a strong
carcinogen. Some rats were fed with black cumin, some were fed with honey and
only one group was fed with a combination of the two ingredients.
After 6
months, those groups of rats that were fed only with black cumin seed had 80%
protection against oxidative stress and cancer formation but those rats that
ate black seed and honey combined together had 100% protection against
oxidative stress, inflammatory response, and cancer formation.
Black seeds
oil is great for radiation treatment
People that
are exposed to a radiation treatment for cancer, during and after the
treatment, experience severe side effects. Because of the anti-cancer
properties of the black cumin seed oil, in 2014, Turkish scientists made
a research in which they showed how this seed can help in the radiation
treatment for cancer.
The effects
of the oil were explored on irradiated rats. First, they were exposed to a
single dose of gamma radiation. One group received a gram of the oil an hour
before radiation and was given a 10 gr. the dose for the next 10 days. The
other group received a saline solution.
The control
group was not exposed to a radiation. After analyzing the data, it was noted
that black cumin seed oil can reduce the oxidative stress markers and has
powerful antioxidant effects, increasing the antioxidant capacity in the liver
tissues of rats.
An Indian
study, conducted in 2012, confirmed that the black cumin seed has
protective effects against radiation damage and biochemical alterations.
Black cumin
seed oil was given to normal and tumor bearing mice before they were exposed to
gamma radiation(100 mg. per 1 kg. of body weight). In both groups, this oil,
because of its antioxidant properties, protected the brain, intestines, spleen
and liver from the harmful effects of the radiation.
This way,
the black seed oil can improve the life of the human cancer patients who are
receiving cancer radiation therapy because it will subdue the harmful effects
of the radiation
The Black
seeds interfere with uncontrolled cell growth and kill liver cancer cells
According to
a study, conducted in 2013 in India, thymoquinone is very beneficial in the
treatment of liver cancer and in the prevention of proliferation of cancer
cells. That was proven by conducting an experiment with two groups of rats.
The first
one was given to drink plain water and the second one was given 0.01%
thymoquinone water. The group that drank water with thymoquinone had decreased
tumor markers and did not develop new cancer nodules as well, which
confirmed the beneficial role of thymoquinone.
The black
seed oil kills lung cells
It is
well-known that black seed oil has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial
properties and because of that is used for treating many diseases in the
traditional medicine. According to a group of Saudi Arabian scientists, black
cumin seed oil and extract can be used for treating lung cancer.
In a
laboratory, they exposed the cancer cells to 0.01 mg/ml of the oil and 1mg/ml
of the extract and evaluated the cells’ viability afterward. The results showed
that the population of the living cancer cells was considerably reduced and
their cellular morphology was changed.
It was also
concluded that the greater concentration of the oil or extract increased the
level of cell death. The cells changed and become smaller.
Black Seed
Components Kill Malignant Brain Cancer Cells
According to
a study conducted by scientists at the Ohio State University in 2013, the
most aggressive and most common type of malignant brain tumor in humans is the
glioblastoma. It was concluded that , for the treatment of this type of brain
tumor, there was a need of thymoquinone – a natural phytochemical with strong
tumor killing abilities.
It has
selective cytotoxic properties for human cells, which means that it kills the
cancer cells and leaves the normal ones untouched.
Thymoquinone
is able to selectively inhibit the cancer cells of the brain and spinal cord to
make clones of themselves, while not impeding the normal cell activity in the
brain and spinal cord. The black seed extract can also hinder autophagy genes
in cancer cells.
Autophagy in
cancer cells keeps the cellular energy production thus enabling the continued
growth of cancer cells. If the energy production is inhibited it will result in
regression of the tumor and will extend the survival of the tumor affected
organs. All things considered, thymoquinone provides a new exciting strategy
for cancer treatment.
